I see the AVG fanboys and cheerleaders are out in full force again here on Yahoo Answers!
Yup, AVG by Grisoft is definately "The Best". Unfortunately one of the things it is not the best at is doing what is is supposed to do, detecting viruses!
In test,

after test,

etc. etc. etc, ad nauseam.
AVG has proven itself to be a mediocre performer at best. Missing almost 20%, while trying to detect known malware, in some tests. Not to mention almost non-existent heuristic detection and infrequent "once-a day" updates.
AVG = Average, at best!
There are much better free alternatives, such as Avast, Active Virus Shield, and Avria Anti-Vir.
I like best the AOL Active Virus Shield. Don't let the name AOL fool you. Active Virus Shield is made by Kaspersky which is one of top-rated anti-virus vendors in the world.
In recent tests, the most popular free anti-virus, AVG, was only able to detect about 82% of a very large sample of viruses. On the other hand, Active Virus Shield was able to detect better than 99% in the same test.

Active Virus Shield has excellent virus detection rates and is extremely light on using your computer resources. (6mb)
And it updates 15 to 20 times a day with new virus definitions, 7 days a week.
Free to anyone, AOL member or not from:

Um usually if you go to the Microsoft website there will be a link that will take you to downloads and it will give you the option of Express OR Custom install you'll want to choose Express if you want the most recent anti-virus they will give it to you. You see you computer I know for a fact because it comes with XP SP2 that you have a Anti-Virus program that you are not aware of so if you have the recent updates from Microsoft you will I'm 100% sure you'll be safe
Feel free to get back to me on this if it doesn't help

Do not get norton, thats a tip. Norton cannot be removed by easy means. It also takes 25 megabytes of memory to run in the background.
Mcaffee is not good either. I use CA Internet security, but it was horrible, it uninstalls when I use bug doctor to fix bugs on my PC.
Go with AVG Free edition. That works very well.

AVG AntiSpyware is not virus protection. I suggest uninstalling that and installing AVG Antivirus:
