Do you switch to a forward facing carseat at 20 pounds, one year, or both? A friend's 3 month old is almost 20 pounds, and was wondering if she should do the forward facing now or at one year.

NO!
A 3 mos old should NOT face forwards in the car. The child must be BOTH 20+ lbs AND 12+ months before facing forwards. Their necks aren't strong enough that young and she would risk spinal damage in a wreck by facing him forward so early.

It is recommended that you keep a child rear facing until they are one year old. If they are 20 pounds and only 3 mos. old, keep them rear facing til they are a year. If the child is out growing their infant seat, then your friend should start looking for a convertible seat. This seat does both rear and forward facing. My recommendations are the Graco Comfort Sport and the Britax Marathon or Boulevard. The graco seat goes from 5-40 pounds, and the britax seat goes from 5-65 pounds. So it is best to keep them rear facing till they are 1 year old.

You can switch carseats when they are 20 pounds and if they are younger like 3 months you should still have them face back they have the car seats that you can use from the time that they are born until they are toddlers but they should still have it back because they cant support there head strength

make sure the baby is rear facing until at least a year. she can buy a carseat that is rear facing and front facing that will last until the child is about 40 lbs.

One year old or 20 lbs - whichever comes LAST. If you have a 15 month old who weighs 19lbs, keep 'em rear facing, but if they're 1 year old and 22 lbs, they can face front.
