work hard, make your own money, pay your own bills,
take care of yourself without anyones help. then you are self reliant. if you are your own boss, then that is the true definition of self reliant(more responsiblities tho).

A responsible person usually is also self reliant, mature and acts and thinks like an adult. In other words, you have to grow up.
Stop lying to yourself, keeping expectations too high, realise your strenghts and weaknesses. When in doubt, do the right thing. When not sure, we all have a conscience that speaks to us, and the more you give this voice a chance to speak the louder it becomes, the clearer your mind becomes.
You will start being more sure of yourself, your choices and act wisely. You will win the respect of friends and family. Most importantly you will learn to respect yourself.

hmmm that's a toughy... I'm trying to figure out the same thing. I guess you just gotta get out there and do things for your self. Work out, play an instrument, go to a party. Don't put all your eggs in one basket as they say. Do all that and you'll start to be more self standing and you wont rely on any single person
