Once you install decking, critter control is a necessity. Regular wash over with bleach solutions controls most of the issues. Also need to place decking in a draining area or create drainage. To find the best options for building one, bring your specs to a home building supply and have a store tech input them into their computer. Their program can simulate the actual deck and all the materials required plus pricing for material options. Also have 'how to' information for do-it-yourself. Enjoy ours - chose a plastic/composite material. Is more expensive but never needs staining and extremely durable, long lasting, and surface has safety features (slide proof, no buckling & no splinters). Gapping is essential - wider with composites.

Nothing can beat the durability of concrete for a patio. Installation is hard work if you do the 12' x 12' area yourself, but the cost of that patio will be the most economical compared anything else. The post construction costs of concrete will be, by far, the least expensive on-going maintenance of all deck or patio materials.
If your proposed patio site is level or almost level now, then preparation of the site will be easy for concrete. BUT, if your site has much of a slope, say more than a 4" drop across the 12', you will have to raise the slabbed area on the low side. This can be done with bricks, blocks, or solid pour of concrete for a low wall that supports the concrete slab.
If you have to go too high, then a deck is in order instead of a slab. There is a point where the cost of an elevating wall will equal the cost of a deck and columns. Then the deciding factor would be post construction maintenance, year after year.
You must consider the piece by piece cost of a stick built deck using the various materials such as pressure treated softwoods, redwood, and the most life-time economical, nailable, material that is plastic wood or recycled HDPE (high-density polyethylene). HDPE is what you get from recycled two-liter plastic bottles. I get my HDPE from Lowe's.
Wood decks must be treated and/or painted from season to season. HDPE is available in colors and never needs painting or treating. Nothing eats it. Nothing.
If you don't know how to work concrete then hire a contractor. A professional crew, on level site, should knock a 12 x 12 square out in not more than two days. That includes leveling, framing, compacting, placing gravel, re-enforcing wire, placing the cement, and finishing. Piece of cake. If you don't know how to do that stuff -- then it won't be pretty.

To do a 12ft by 12ft patio in the back yard personally I would go with patio slabs. It would be less expensive and last much longer. No major upkeep. You can do it yourself if you are not scared of some back labor. Make sure your area is level, a slight slope for drainage, very slight so you don't notice it. I cannot remember the exact equation for it, but Home Depot or a landscape place will know. Dig your spot, put sand it, pound this until it is firm and level. Weed barrior is also good to put it, nothing worse than pulling weeds out of the cracks between the patio stones.

This is really something to find that many all together. For someone like me who is just really starting to get involved with woodworking this was like letting me loose in a candy store and telling me I could have anything I wanted. That was my dream when I was a kid.

Along with stone, mud and animal parts, wood was one of the first materials worked by early humans. Microwear analysis of the Mousterian stone tools used by the Neanderthals show that many were used to work wood. The development of civilization was closely tied to the development of increasingly greater degrees of skill in working these materials.
