The warmer the water the more intense the hurricane,whenever a storm meets the water in the Gulf of Mexico,it's very warm,the storm intensifies !!

Warm Sea Surface Temps (SST), above 80 degrees F. Another main factor that people forget is wind shear. If you have to stron gof winds aloft it will basically rip the storm apart. In Wilmas case there was hardly any.
