Sounds vaguely familiar... something with Gene Autry.

Okay, you got my curiosity up, so I researched it. Wayne starred as Singin' Sandy Saunders in the 1933 movie "Riders of Destiny". His singing was dubbed. Autry was NOT in the movie.

I had no idea he was in a musical...but, then again, his singing couldn't possibly have been worse than his acting, so it sort of makes sense.
