Welcome the the era of change. I don't think that the industry is better or worse, but it is different. The industry is really controlled overall by a few entities. Where as there were 6 major labels during your life time, we are now down to 3 majors, WMG, SONY/BMG, Universal/Vevendi. Most of the indies have been absorbed or had their talent raided by the majors. Most of the radio is in the hands of Clear channel as are the venues(Live Nation) and the trade papers. With so few choice controlling what is put our, written about, played or promoted, college radio, the Internet, and satellite radio now have more importance to the new voices or sounds. The opportunities are still there, but the way to get to them is different and the public at large hasn't found the source for new music. We all have our sources, but there isn't a dominant source that we all have in common. To make it big is not impossible, but at the moment, there is no definitive way to do so.
I listen to a variety of music from punk, emo, jazz, neo soul, country, salsa, and rock. I've heard quite a lot of music in my life, so I'm into something different...something with an edge. Once too many people start to follow suite, then I lose interest and start looking for the new thing. By that token, I've fallen in love with some really out there songs because they don't sound like anything else. I love Bjork, PJ Harvey and other chick singers. Out of the box is cool with me.

Music industry has sucked for years. Basically blame Kurt cobain. Companies publish "Fad" music. What will sell fast, quick and in big quantities.
Look at new "stars" of today, how many will be around in 10 years?
PLUS MTV helped kill the music industry. More emphasis on looks and appearance than quality.

It has sucked for a long time now. They keep pushing out crap and the funny thing is people are actually buying it.....I like the Alternative music of the early 90's and some recent too...
