My employer called me this morning and left a message for me to call back. I am off today and I know they were trying to call me in because the other employee is still sick and left early yesterday and I came in early yesterday. I am sick too with the flu. I worked very hard yesterday for 10 hours without a break or lunch (we were shorthanded as usual and the customers never stopped comming in). I woke up feeling really bad and then got the message on my voicemail which I haven't returned. I feel bad that the morning person will have to work a double but then again she was the cause of one of our best workers to quit several months ago which left us short handed . No one want to apply in this department because you make 50 cents more an hour for 10 times the work. I made a quick trip to the store for food and medicine but I just don't feel like working today and besides I have to work the whole weekend anyway and I konw I will still be sick. What should I tell them tommorow?

What should I tell them tomorrow when I go into work and they asked why didn't answer the call? I knew if I answered they would pressure me into coming and I just don't feel like being a machine today. I could do light duty but there is no such thing at my job.

By now they probably got someone else to come in. I would call now and tell them you've been sick with the flu yourself and were knocked out and couldn't even get up to go near the phone until recently. Apologize for not calling back earlier but say you were too sick to even check your messages.

I'm sorry you're so sick.

The morally correct thing to do is tell the truth. That's hard to do, but in this case, you are right not to go in to work. Think about it...if the person that called in sick is sick and can't work, why would they expect you to come to work if you are sick. It doesn't even make sense to bring someone that is sick in, just to replace someone that is sick.

Plus, you can tell them that you had the business's best interest in mind. If you would have come in, you could have infected other employees or customers.

Or....you could lie and tell them that your answering machine has been malfunctioning, but that you will try to fix it when you have time. You haven't had much time because you have been covering other people's shifts. When you have time off next time, you can get it fixed.

Good Luck!

Hi there,

Well maybe you should pretend you weren't home.

Go to work tomorrow and act like you didn't get the message. If you are asked simply say you felt like crap so you went to stay with parents or a friend.

Or maybe just say - Hey I'm not well either, so knowing I had to come in for the weekend i turned my ph off and let the machine take all my calls. I also turned the machine down so i couldn't hear it and i slept peacefully away until very late in the night. Sorry.

Hope this helps.

Darling don't worry about it. Is there any possible way that you could find yourself another job, because it really doesn't seem fair to be doing all that work for nearly nothing. Just say that you intended to call them back, but you felt so weak and tired, that you went to bed and completely forgot about it. You're not a machine and if you're sick, you need to stay home until you feel better. The problem with bussineses is that they only care about what you can do for them and if they're workers are ill, they don't give a damn, but to me that is disgusting. If it is possible to find another job, i suggest you do it and leave that place. I Hope You Better Soon! and don't be afraid to stand up for yourself... :)!

Tell them that you had to go to the doctor because of your own illness. And your doctor said to stay home when you're sick with the flu otherwise you are just going to give the illness to everyone else.

a) Lie through your teeth. Tell them you were at the hospital hooked up to an IV

b) Defend your rights. Tell the boss firmly "It was my day off, I was sick - didn't want to go to work - deal with it."

Inform them of how contagious you are, and that you didn't return their call because you were resting all day, trying to get better.
