For the past two weeks, when flushing the toilet, the tank emits a sound like a Bull Moose in heat. I looked inside and saw miscellaneous "innards". A perpendicular white tube on the left side of the tank has a green cap on the top of it. Water appears to be leaking from the cap. When I push down hard on the green cap, the water ceases to leak and the decibels decrease. However, I would rather not have to take the lid off of the tank and press down on the green cap, every time the toilet is flushed.

go to the depot or lowes or better yet the local hardware store and get a new fill valve (the green capped thing). while you there, get the flush valve and a bolt kit, too. for about $40.00 you can replace the guts to your toilet and have it working like new. no sense repairing one part only to have to take it apart in a little while for the next part. the instructions come with pictures to show you how to repair it and are very good. it shouldn't take you more than 2 hours, tops. if you are slightly handy you can do it. check the directions on the boxes to make that decision. good luck!

If you are mildly handy you should be able to do this yourself. The kit to replace the entire mechanics of a tank will run you $20 to $40. And you might as well replace everything since you are going through the effort. You will have to shut the water off going to the toilet, flush it empty. Loosen and remove the 2 or3 bolts holding the tank to the bowl. Take the tank off and replace the parts. Then reattach the tank.
Plan on an hour of your time.
The other option is to put in a new toilet. If your toilet is over 15 years old, it flushes with 3.5 gallons of water. Newer toilets flush with no more then 1.6 gallons. Think of the thousands of gallons of water you will save each year. Good flushing 1.6 gallon toilets start around $100 to $150, but think of them as an investment in conservation, and your water bill will go down a bit too.
Good luck

Sounds like you need to replace the ballcock valve. These are fairly cheap and pretty easy to replace yourself. Available at most hardware stores. You'll have to cut off the water to the toilet, flush to drain the tank, use rags to sop out the last water in the tank, then remove the old valve and install the new valve.
Repair tip - If your fill line from the wall angle valve to the toilet is a hard pipe, it will be easier to go ahead and replace this at the same time with a flexible line.

You have a bad washer and debris in the line. Remove the green cap; 1/4 turn twist off or 2 screws, take the washer to the plumbing supply, before replacing, flush water through the valve.

I think you can figure out how to change your tank parts. I just wanted to add a tip that I use, after shutting the water off, flush toilet to get rid of water in the tank, then I use a giant sponge like the ones U would use to wash your car with to soak up the rest, sure beats mopping it up later and kneeling in it.

1. Lock and secure the bathroom at all costs, a bull moose in heat is quite dangerous. Sell the House.
or
2. Replace the part with the green cap

You don't really need a plumber to do this. You do need to go to the store ad get a new innards kit. Don't worry if you're not sure just what to do. Each kit comes with step-by-step instructions. It should only take about 30 min. for a novice and you should only need a pair of pliers to do it.

NO ! YOU NEED A HUNTER!
Misc. innards is the technical term for a ballcock assembly. The local hardware store will have them.If you go to a real hardware store, not 1 of those Mega-marts full of scientific rockets, they can tell you how to do it. IT'S EASY

**** SORRY FOR THE CAPS ****
YOU SHOULD TURN OFF THE WATER SUPPLY TO THE TANK AND REMOVE THE 'TUBE' (TOILET FILL VALVE) AND TAKE IT TO LOWES OR HOMEDEPOT ... IF YOU HAVE A SMALL PLUMBING SUPPLY HOUSE IN YOUR AREA THEY WOULD KNOW MORE THERE BUT TAKE IT TO WHERE EVER AND TELL THEM YOU NEED A NEW ONE .... IT SHOULD BE ABOUT 10 OR SO DOLLARS ... OR YOU COULD CHANGE THE WHOLE TOILET OUT FOR AOBUT 100 - 150 DOLLARS DEPENDING ON THE TYPE YA WANT.
BEST OF LUCK =)
XOXO
