How you should react depends on what kind of person your friend is, and how much you value his or her friendship. I started to tell you to just say thank you and then throw it away when they leave. But then I remembered that you said the calendar was for the year 2006? And they actually gave it to you on Christmas 2006? That's an insult. It's only good for a week. But again It all depends on the type of friend. Is he or she usually a giving person? Then maybe they were broke this christmas and didn't want to approach you empty handed. On the other hand, if this friend is usually stingy and selfish throughout the year, I'd be insulted to receive for a gift, a paper calendar that expires in one week. If you intend on maintaining this friendship, just simply tell the friend that next Christmas you prefer not to exchange gifts. That'll keep them from giving you something crappy next season.

Ask if that is some kind of a joke. Maybe your friend is having some financial problems or didn't realize that the calendar was for the wrong year.
