Allopatric speciation occurs when a barrier forms that seperates the species. One half of the population evolves certain characteristics while the other half evolves differently.

Sympatric speciaiton occurs when a genetic mutation develops within the population. Those with the mutation evolve differently than those without.

Peripatric and Parapatric speciation occurs when a new species is introduced to the population and that efeects the speciaiton.

Speciation, then, is integral to the evolutionary process:

Natural selection shapes most evolutionary adaptive change nearly simultaneously in genetically independent lineages as speciation is triggered by extinction in "turnover" events.

When physical environmental events that go "too far too fast" start triggering regional, species-level extinction, then evolutionary change -- predominantly via speciation -- occurs.

In times of environmental normalcy, speciation and species-wide evolutionary change are comparatively rare.

I just had a quiz on this and I got a 12/15 which is pretty good since normally my grades are in the low-C range. Mrs. Peterson tells me that if I keep this up she will move me to the front of the class which is nice because otherwise I have to sit next to Billy and he isn't very nice.
