The average for an adult is supposedly 8 hours a night. However, please bear in mind that this is just an average across everyone. Some people require less, some people require more. British Prime Minister, Margaret Thatcher famously only needed 5 hours sleep a night. Other people may need much longer than 8 hours.
Your body will tell you how long you need to sleep for. If you try to sleep for 8 hours but consistently wake up earlier, then you need less sleep. If you don't wake up naturally after 8 hours (i.e without an alarm clock) then you probably need longer than 8 hours.
Don't try and skimp on sleep. It will make you tired and less productive and could lead to long term mental health problems. It's okay to miss a good night's sleep once in a while but don't do it too frequently.
