Well what hotel are you staying at and where? I am in the industry and can help you with a letter if you want. Need more information if you want it detailed.

Basically just be polite:

Dear Sir/Madam:
I am going to be visiting your property on _____________.

I have been to many of your other fine properties in other states and have always enjoyed the level of service your hotel chain provides.

If you have the availability, I would like to request a room upgrade at your property. (give them reason why you are making this request - special occassion, etc...)

Then just close your letter with a simple thank you and I look forward to hearing from you.

Hope that helps. But like I said - if you want it more detailed - send me an e-mail and I would be happy to help you further.

why are you writing a letter?
simply by stating that the day you are spending in the hotel is a special day for you and has some sort of significance in your life is enough to get a room upgrade...
it really works

Wait till you arrive. If it is slow season and upgraded rooms are hard to sell, I will give them away at our property. Such a small gesture always makes a guest feel special. Just ask at the front desk, do you have any complimentary upgrades available.
