The group here that told you not to clean the coins, hit the nail on the head. The coins would lose value and even worse, you could do more damage. You did not mention just what coins they are. If real old, go to a coin dealer, so he can see just what is the problem and if the coins are worth trying to save. There are professionals out there that do what is called conserve coins and do a real good job, but it is not cheap.

DO NOT CLEAN THE COINS.
The main reason is that no matter what type cleaner you use, it will cause abrasions on the coin. They may be tiny, but in coins, the smallest scratch changes the value of the coin. In the case of some coins, that scrath may result in a loss of value of thousands.

in response to the girl above me... IT WILL HURT THE VALUE!
go into a coin shop and look at the coins. if you see a dirty, old coin and compare it to the same type of coin, but a cleaned version, the cleaned version is A LOT less expensive. old furniture is pretty much the same way.

You have to clean them with something that won't scratch them. A coin dealer probably sells a solution for cleaning coins.

Actually it is best to leave them as they are. I collect coins, old and new , and I remember reading somewhere that cleaning them causes them to lose more value.

Please never clean a coin. Sixty or 70 years ago it was the thing to do, but today the coin hobby downgrades the value of a cleaned coin.

Do not clean them. Someone brought me an 1836 half dollar That I offered $200. for. They left with it, to think about it. When they returned, they had "cleaned" it with tooth paste. My offer went down to $20.
