If you mean to accelerate the learning process, find your local "teacher's stores," - like Learning is Fun. They have lots of products for English Language Learners.

You might also talk to your local Public School teachers - who have certification in Early Childhood Development. They teach ELL - or English Language Learners every day. They will have a lot of ideas, and appreciate your interest and effort in getting the child started right away!

The thing you need to do is to make it enjoyable. If she has a favorite doll or toy, start by naming it in English as well. Then construct games around the toy or doll doing things, games that mix the current language and English. Once she is more confident with words you may not get her to shut up, so be prepared.

After she is comfortable with the spoken word then you can worry about the written word. Five is a bit young for a formal and regimented 'learn the alphabet, make the sounds,' etc.

Good luck.

i was just like that girl... i came to America when i was five, not knowing a word of English!

the key is to speak slowly and clearly. she won't be able to understand grammar rules and stuff, so just let her listen to you speaking... just speak a lot of stuff, but don't exhaust her. let her get "acquainted" with a lot of vocabulary.

find an easy book that's been translated to both English and the language that the girl speaks. or better, find an English translation of a book she's already read and knows well. (ask parents for help). then, make your goal be for her to understand the book in both languages.

Well, I learned to read through Hooked On Phonics. I taught my younger sister to read at 3 years with this too. It sounds like you are doing well right now. Continue with teaching the alphabet and sounds. Make cards with words and pictures like CAT with a picture of a cat and point out how the sounds and letters correspond. then go on to BAT and FAT and then let them guess how to form other words. At the same time try teaching them to write out the letters of the alphabet. You can find free worksheets online with alphabet tracing and such or create your own. Hooked on phonics may be expensive to buy since you are volunteering, but if you can visit a local library or if you have any simple books with lots of pictures and simple words, read the books with the children and once they learn simple words like cat, bat & fat, let them read those words in the text out loud. They will have fun with this. Sorry about the skipping around with topics. I tried to go back into what I wrote and add more details but Yahoo would not let me and made me type over the letters. Anyways, good luck :)

Assuming that you are in an Englishspeaking Country: Just talk to her. Read her books in English and play music in English. She is still young enough that she should pick it up pretty quickly on her own and speak without an accent.
