You touch on a subject close to my soul. Alot of people abused as children grow up to abuse their children because they will say they know no other way. I was abused as a child as was my three younger sisters. I found out I was pregnant and I decided that I would not carry on the abuse. I went to counseling, parenting classes, anything I could find. One of my sisters had a baby a couple years later. She chose a different path and had her child taken away before any more harm could come to the child. Even being offered classes to get the child back; she insisted she had done no wrong and left the child behind.

Some people go on to abuse others... then there are people like me who do not. The cycle must break at some point. I choose to have it end with me.

Offering counseling is an excellent idea... the only problem is that abuse is often an unreported crime. The shame and the emotional fear (physical fear for your well-being also) keep people silent.

I am glad to hear you asking questions like this. The more we all talk about abuse as a society, the easier it becomes for people break out of their silent worlds and heal.

yes, counseling programs should be made more readily available to those who have been abused.

it's important to know, though, that there are ways in which a victim can receive these types of services. for example, when one reports a crime to the police they may be able to receive crime victim's compensation. the amount received varies depending on the nature of the victimization, but part of it is meant to go towards counseling services. in my area, for example, a person can receive up to $11,000 per violent victimization - regardless of whether the person actually wins the case at trial!! Hopefully, some of this money is going towards therapy for those who have been abused.

Also, many local rape crisis centers provide free therapy for those who have been abused. the one in my area will provide 1 year of free individual therapy and unlimited group therapy for victims.

So that explains your problems.
Was it your dad or brother?
Oh wait... they're the same person! My bad!
