Sponges are filter feeders, like clams and many other aquatic invertebrates. That means they pass water through their bodies, filter out any particles that are contained in the water, and digest any of those particles that are digestible. Therefore they don't have to "know" what to eat. They don't make any selections. Whatever comes along that is small enough to enter their filtration apparatus is ingested.

I've never thought about that before.

When a human does drugs, they are left with a brain like a sponge. Do you think it works the other way round?

The brain is just a bundle of nerves and ganglia it's functions can be distributed throughout the body

bacteria consume food also and they don't have a brain or nerves - it's programed in the DNA

Sponges aren't picky, if its small enough to absorb, they absorb it.They have not been known to demand Hollandaise sauce on fish excrement.

same holds true with many lower in the kingdom----like bacteria-----supposedly their gut hungry and they eat......the more activity -the more they eat whatever is their God-given instinct.......WHY DO HORSES EAT HAY ? RATHER THAN MEAT ?
