Just press the Print Screen | SysRq button. It copies exactly what you see to the clipboard. Then, just open Paint or any image editing program and press CTRL+V to paste it. If you want to take a screenshot of just the current window, press ALT+Print Screen.

When you press Print Screen the screen shot goes into a memory area called the Windows Clipboard. Simply open a picture processing program and do a Ctrl+V (or select Edit/Paste) and the screen shot will appear in the picture program's workspace. Then you can "Save As" a bitmap, .jpg, or whatever.

When you do the Printscreen , it puts a copy in the clipboard. Bring up your notepad, word processing or other software and paste it.
Windows xp handles printscreen and cntl+printscreen the same, you get a copy of your entire desktop, windows and background.

You don't need to press Ctrl
Print Screen takes a snapshot of the screen and just puts it on the clipboard. From there you can paste it into any app.
