I bought a cemetery plot and would like to use it the summer for miscellaneous activities. Is this acceptable?
I’m in my early 30’s and recently purchased a cemetery plot. Rather that let it sit there and receive any use from it until I’m dead, I’ll like to partake in some summer activities this coming year. The grounds are kept so nice and the grass is so green, I’d like to sunbathe on it. I’d also like to get outdoors and use it for some stretching and yoga. I’ve told a few of my friends about these plans and they state the cemetery may not let me “hang out” there. I disagree – I bought the land and have the paper work to show anyone who may oppose my recreation. So, I guess my question – Is this acceptable? Don’t I have the right to do as I please, as the plot is mine?

Are you for real? :) I can't imagine sunbathing on a cemetery plot - lol. But as far as the legality - I think if you read your entire deed to the plot there are rules about what can go on in a cemetery, mostly because it is common ground to a lot of different people. Many people visiting Grandma and Grandpa would be offended by your behavior even though you seem to have no malicious intent. If you are really interested in being able to do what you like on your cemetery plot, and have enough money, then look into the laws about making your own backyard a cemetery. You can legally make this happen but it has to be so many feet away from a major water source, etc. - lots of rules here as well. Well you made me laugh but I hope you don't get yourself arrested over this - it might be your land but it is kind of like a coop - you own a part of the cemetery not the whole thing. :)

Assuming that you don't litter or deface anything (not that you would, of course) I don't think there would be any problem with it. You may want to call in advance, though, to see if any funerals will be taking place on the day you plan to visit - a lot of mourners seeing someone standing on a plot in stretch pants, doing yoga, would probably not be very good for their psyches. Anyhow, good luck.
