I'm sitting in my apartment bedroom here in South East Ohio (Smack Dab in the Appalachian Hills) looking out my window right now, and I've always noticed after a hard rain the hills always start to ''smoke''. I'm guessing its steam, but where does it come from? It only happens after a hard rain too. Can water evaporate that quickly? If so, why that fast? No dumb answers please.

Hills are made of solid rocks whereas the ground surface is made of sands, different type of soils and of course some broken rocks. As the hills are made of solid rocks they can retain more heat received from the sun compared to the ground. So when there is a rain more evaporation takesplace over the hill than the land. That is the reason.
