I am in New York City and tomorrow (January 6th) it's going to be near 70 degrees! That's just insane. While I love warm weather, I do find it really scary that it's this warm. I'm concerned about global warming and the effect it's going to have on us. I know I have a wild imagination but is it possible things will eventually get so hot we won't be able to survive here anymore? And how far off until scientists predict things to get really bad?

This is probably an answer that would be considered politically incorrect but the climate change can be largely attributed to a natural adjustment. That is, we are still leaving an ice age. The world goes in cycles with respect to ice ages (or rather climate in general), currently we are warming; eventually, it will peak and the climate will cool as we go back towards another ice age.

Things to consider, the overall climate change is difficult to accurately gauge as it hasn't been accurately measured until recently though a good guess might be a 1 degree increase in average temperature over the past 50-100 years.

Another thing to think about is that a single volcanic eruption can easily produce more air pollution than has the entire civilization of man (though this may have changed in the past decade or so; but I believe it still held when Mt St Helens erupted last).

This is not the first time that we have has unusually warm seasons. I remember as a kid wearing shorts in January in the 70's in Chicago. I don't doubt that all the things that we do effect the planet but I doubt that I has done it this quickly. That is probably something our grandchildren will have to deal with. The reason they spout so much about global warming is because in reality most people are not interested in something they will never likely see happen. They have to make it sound more serious than it is to get people to listen.

First of all the answer to your question is no, this years winter has nothing to do with global warming, or El Nino for that matter as mentioned in an earlier post. You cannot link one particular event to such a broad scale idea. This years abnormally warm temps are due to a primarily zonal wind pattern that has kept artic air masses bottled up at the north pole. May I remind you that as of today (jan 2nd) there is no significant signs that an el nino is occuring so please dont assume and use these terms if you do not know what they really do mean... As for the other post...The process you have described is not "global warming" the process you are refering to is the greenhouse effect. Shortwave radiation from the sun is absorbed by the earth and re-emitted as longwave radiation on the order of about 9 microns. This outgoing radiation is NOT "TRAPPED" nor "reflected" by greenhouse gases such as C02, methane, water vapor, etc. It is absorbed and re-emitted by these gases. Similar to what happens in a greenhouse, hence the name. Global warming is a very slow process and we should not be jumping to outragoues conclusions that certain synoptic scale weather events and patterns are caused by global warming. People need to educate themselves by reading scholarly articles and books rather than just believing what the media is telling them. You should not just assume that this winter is warm, or that hurricane was strong, or that tornado was devastating because of global warming. That is completely ignorant and misleading.

I'm more scared the shoe is going to drop and we'll have another Quebec Ice Storm or other disaster. I'm in Canada and we have no snow, it's not natural, we love our winters. Even the snow machines at the mountain ski resorts can't keep up. The only good thing is the heating bill is way down, but I haven't even got boots and coats out yet. We won't be taking over Florida after all.

I'm pretty sure its just a coincidence. Yeah, its warm in the Mid-West and West Coast but I think thats just due to the jet stream. Something can happen waaaay up there (and yes thats a scientific term) which will cause the jet stream to shift bringing up warm weather from the south.

I don't know if thats the case but I'd like to think so.

I think scientists now are way off on what they should be on. they are all preoccupied on what will happen in the future when they are dead. But now they need to come up with why the weather is so warm. I live in New Jersey and I agree with you.......THE WEATHER IS TO WARM. I hope global warming is not happening and that it never happens.

It is getting real scary. It's not really cold and there is no snow. If we don't do anything I predict weather in the 80's next december. and in July, cities like NY will hit 100 degrees.

You have no control . Personally, I would love to see 75 degree temps all year round. I live in a state of 4 seasons - Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter. I love my state, but it is too expensive for heating fuel.

The power industry and their lobbyists and appropriate-wing think of tanks ordinarily. My techniques on it incredibly is which you're actually not making any sort of coherent case. What does abortion might desire to do with climate replace? Are you attempting to make the case that because of the fact Democrats help abortion, they might desire to be incorrect approximately worldwide warming? that would not make any experience in any respect. shouldn't a expert-existence man or woman subject approximately the following day's era? i'm afraid there is not any argument or logic on your question. only incoherent rambling. i don't care once you're a democrat or republican, please attempt to think of until now posting. thank you.

Here in Italy it's almost the same. One of the hottest winter. . .I'm a bit concerned too and actually I agree this is not normal. But it's our fault. We all know what we are going toward to but none of us does anything to stop it.Global warming is serious and we will see the effects soon.
