I want my baby boy circumsized, and the pediatrician you pick usually does it... I am wondering if you don't have a pediatrician picked out do they still have someone to do that? Anyone know?

I am delivering about 30 minutes away, and want a local private pediatrician... but they won't go that far to just circumsize a baby, and I wouldn't want them to have to...

I have it on my list of "ASK DR THIS" next time... just wondering if I don't have one (or do, but they are unavailable), can we still do this procedure?

Thanks for any input.

Hi. I had a boy 9 years ago. The pediatrician who I picked out before he was born, was not affiliated with the hospital, where I was having my baby. So, they assigned a doctor at the hospital to do the procedure. Actually, I believe it was my OB-GYN who did the circumcision because I remember him coming to my room and asking me about it. Anyway, don't have anything to worry about.

Ask them what their stance is on the things that are important to you, i.e. vaccinations (since we're not vaxing we want a dr. who will at least respect our decision and not badger us every time we go in), breastfeeding, cosleeping, etc. Also ask them about feeding...I hear so many people on here saying stuff like "my pediatrician said it's okay to start solids at 3 months." Which is NOT okay. If they say anything other than six months, they aren't up on the current research that says 6 months is the soonest, so I'd really question at that point whether they were up on OTHER things. And ask about their on-call system, whether you would be able to get them or another pediatrician on the phone nights & weekends if needed.

There was a specific doctor who did this at our hospital. That person did our son's, and did a wonderful job. So I think it all depends on the hospital you have your baby at. If you can find out if your hospital has someone who does this there, that would be great as long as you can trust them. Our son was circumsized a day or two after birth- we were in the hospital for 4 days. But I feel having someone do it at the hospital would be better mainly because they can keep an eye out on it for you to let you know if anything goes wrong, or if it's not healing properly.

Goodluck!

Check with your OB-GYN - in the hospitals here, they're the ones who do it, unless the family hires someone privately for religious reasons.

There's no medical reason that it needs to be done right away, nor is there one stating it doesn't need to be done at all - it's cool to wait until you pick a pediatrician or see them for the first time, and then set it up to be done later. It can be done at any time - it's easier on the boy if it's done early, but not the end of the world if he's older.

your pediatrician should be going to check the baby right after birth.
my son was born sunday morning and the pediatrician saw him first thing monday morning (when he did the "snip") and again on tuesday and he came in my room and discussed with me what he observed and any questions i had before going home.

when does your pediatrician plan on seeing your son for the first time??

there may be hospitalists (doctors that are in-house doctors) that may be able to see your baby and do his "snip", but you need to call the hospital to find out.

get things straight before you go into labor b/c you don't want to have to worry about that when the baby comes. usually, if you give the hospital your ped's # they will call him/her when you deliver so they know they have a new patient born.

take care.

I did not get this done on either of my boys. It's not a necessary procedure and really a disservice. There are millions of nerve endings in that foreskin that make sex pleasureable for a male and his partner too. It protects and lubricates the penis head. No way could I have done such a thing to my boys.

However if you are convinced on doing it, make sure they give the baby an anesthetic as they often do it without ANY anesthetic and babies DO feel it. It's a barbaric procedure so make sure you get someone who does the job right as there is no returning skin once removed and if it's bigger than the amount of skin the doctor has left behind then it can be very painful when he gets an erection later in life.

This procedure is no longer covered where we live as it's considered "cosmetic" and not essential.

Check it out in case you have any doubts:

This procedure originated when doctors in the 50's said it was necessary....by the way, they were all jewish doctors in those days.

Educated people know better these days.

My father never had an infection and his worked just fine according to my mom, and my hubby's works amazingly fine and I'm sure my boys' will work just fine too....as for dirty...well those who are going to be dirty will be dirty with or without foreskin. No one said you have to peel back the layers and clean it with your tongue you know.

The person who circumsized my son was not his pediatrician, it was my dr. that delivered him.. He was circumsized 2 wks after he was born. They didnt do it in the hosp. bc my insurance doesnt pay for that. I had to pay cash

And too, bring a friend with you, you wont be able to go in the room with your son, but itll be tough on you, he'll stop crying once you go in there and hold him.. He'll be alright. Im not trying to worry you, i just want you to be prepared.

Congratulations for your decision!

The APP is not against the procedure, as momma2mingbu suggests in the previous post.

Is it NOT true that the AAP (American Academy of Paediatrics) does not recommend circumcision. They simply say they leave the decision to parents. But recently, and specially after the recent studies by the US National Institutes of Health, the AAP has been discussing if it may be necessary to change their policy and recommend circumcision to all newborns as they used to do, so in the future we may see that the AAP advocates circumcision again.
