why is it important that chromosomes make exact copies of themselves before the cell divides?

Mitosis is used in replicating somatic (body cells).

Each body cell has a specific function, a function coded for by the DNA in that cell. In order to preform that specific function, the cell requires that particular coding.

Chromosomes that will undergo mitotic division (mitosis) need to make an identical copy of themselves in order to insure that the "next generation" of that cell will continue to preform the function properly. Problems occur when the DNA is recoded wrong or there are mistakes made.

The exact copy needs to be made before the cell divides because that is the only point at which the template (original) DNA is available to be copied.

so then at the end
of mitosis
there are two cells in which both contain 46 chromosomes

(there are supposed to be 46 chromosomes in each cell in mitosis)(in miosis they also copy each other but they end with half the chromosomes (23) and there are 23 chromosomes in each of the 4 cells)[miosis has 23 because they are the sex cells so then they baby has half from the mother and half from the father and then the baby will have46 chromosomes and not an abnormal amount]
(mitosis is the cell division for the skin cells and the other ones((every thing but the sex cells)) because they need a normal amount)

So that the "new" cell will contain the exact same genetic information as the original. Any defect in this "copying" process is call a mutation and can lead to a disfunctional cell.

the new replicated cell will have the same function. if the cell changes it no. of chromosomes then the functon would be different...i think this is relate dto cancer..mutations etc
