I'm a student and very limited in my budget. I need to find a place by this summer. A studio or a 2 room with bathroom will do. Where is a good place to look?

Hello,
He is my opinion ( I was born and raised in Montreal....and still living there).
Here are the trendiest neighborhoods: Plateau Mont-Royal Mile-End, Quartier Latin and the McGill Ghetto are probably the nicest /trendiest places to live...they can be expensive BUT also affordable, many students find apartments in these areas so it is possible.
Also Rosemont is nice but more french, N-D-G is nice to and more english. The downtown area is also nice to live in but is more expensive.
If you want much cheaper apartments you have to go further form downtown...Ahuntsic, Côte-des-Neiges, Villeray and Hochelaga-Maisoneuve have very nice apartements for lower prices...but you are either further from downtown or in not as nice neighborhoods than the firsts that I mentionned...

I don't know if you know that...but in Montreal we all move on the same day (well the big majority), they are apartments available all year round, but most are vacant on July 1st. The advantage of getting a place at other times of the year is that you usually get a better deal for it because it's low season...and less (much less) people are looking for a place so it is less crazy. (ex. I got my place ( a 6 rooms + basement and backyard in Plateau Mont-Royal for 1000$/month...in April, in July it would have been at least 1500$...) In the high season a place gets rented in about a day, so you have to be fast...right now you can take you time and shop around more...

Here are the best place to look for adds...
The Hour is the place everyone looks for an apartement...

so there you go..
good luck!

Will you be here to attend some sort of summer courses, or will you be here for the summer holiday season?

If you will be attending McGill, Concordia, or some other Montreal university, they can probably offer you some information on student housing on one of their websites.

If you are simply looking for a 3-4 month lease for the summer, you may be able to sublet an apartment that "usually" is leased to the students when they are here for the regular school sessions.

You may want to try one of the websites I have listed below. Some areas you may be able to get less expensive apartments are in the sectors of Verdun or St. Henri. There are also nice student apartments in what they call the Plateau area.

Most of the summer nightlife in Montreal is centered around Bishop street, the old port of Montreal, or along the southern part of St. Denis or St. Laurent avenues. There are also dozens of festivals, such as Just For Laughs comedy festival and the Montreal Fireworks festival.
