Different processors have different 'footprints'. That means that within a certain range, you can take an 'early' model and replace it with a later one. Or if the CPU is 'toast', you can replace it. But don't think that y ou can take an old laptop and magically invigorate it by putting in a new processor.
Changing it out is fairly easy... you'll need.
static strap
cpu
possibly a cpu fan
gel (to 'connect' the cpu to the fan - heatwise)

yes, but it is extremely risky and hard. You will have to tear apart your computer and probably take apart 10 other things before you can actually reach the processor. I would reccommend just getting a new computer if the processor's not working.

Yes, it is entirely possible. If you don't know how or don't feel comfortable tearing apart your laptop, don't do it and take it to a professional. I've replaced many things on many laptops...it's easy once you do it a couple times, but if you are not familiar with working on computers, don't try because you can really mess it up.
