Confidence to me is trusting your own skills, despite public influence.
I am confident with the way I chose and choose to raise my children. They have been my greatest accomplishment. I had started having them at the young age of 20. Everyone thought that I was crazy; that I should be out enjoying my life instead of marriage and children. But, I did it anyway. Within 4 years, I had my three children.
And guess what happened? While pregnant with my last child, I developed cancer. If I had waited until the age that my family wanted me to be, to have children. I would not have ever had any.
Now, all I hear is, "Thank God you didn't listen to us! Or you would not have been able to have any children." I trusted myself and what I could handle, my reward....three healthy beautiful children!

A tough situation I encountered involved moving to a new place I had never been and where I knew no one. Basically, I had two options before me. I could stew in my own lonliness or I could go out and network. Because I chose to network, confidence played an important role as I recognized my own insecurities. It was confidence that allowed me to overcome them and give the best impression of myself to others. Be careful not to confuse confidence with cockyness. The line is fine.

I took two years of theatre in school, in eight and ninth grade, and it really helped to develop my confidence. I remember the first time I did an audition, and my knees were shaking! It was terrible! But, over time, with practice, I learned how to memorize lines, how to project my voice and how to deliver my words in a powerful way. Since then, I feel much more confident in any situation where I need to speak. I know a lot of people who are more scared of public speaking than of dying! However, because of the confidence I gained through theatre, I have no fear of speaking. In fact, someone asked me today (Friday) to give a speech on Monday, and I said, "Sure" without having to think about it, all thanks to the two years of theatre classes. Two other people said they wouldn't do it, because they were afraid. I don't think I will ever fear a situation like that audition again. That's the gift of experience combined with confidence.
