windows vista will not become the standard operating system for at least another 3 years
this is because of a few reasons, first being the amount of hardware it requires, for example, the average user will not have the graphic card on their system that vista requires,as vista requires a card with 128mb ram and pixel and shader model 2.0,and as alot of systems bought these days use s.m.a (shared memory architecture)or intergrated graphics these set ups dont have pixel and shader models at all
also vista requires a hell of a lot of ram, allthough microsoft say 512mb is the required amount,i have 1.5gb on my system and vista struggles even with this amount,i recommend at least 2gb of memory (ddr2) to run vista smoothly
finally the processor is another problem, microsoft recommend 800mhz and above but again this would not run vista adequately,i recommend a dual core processor such as a athlon64 x 2 or intel core duo, these are easy enough power to run vista
vista also requires a dvd-rom,and at least 20gb of hard drive space, but most new p.c,s are shipped with much more than this
graphically, vista is superior to xp,with the aero glass design incorporating the transparent windows and 3d tilting windows
security wise, vista holds its own with windows defender, and settings can only be changed by the administrator, such as the device manager and the system properties, vista also keeps the service pack 2 interface allthough its not called sp2,but most of the settings stay the same
vista has some great new defualt games such as titan chess in full 3d
a new direct x is incorporated in vista, direct x 10 is currently only supported by one graphic processing unit, the nvidia ge-force 8800gt,but this is irelevant as no software manufacturer has even started writing games using this direct x
vista will be shipped in 9 "flavours" or versions,i am not precisely sure of each one but i know there are a 1.vista basic 2.vista premium 3.vista ultimate( i am using the beta version of this) 4.vista bussines and a few more,im not sure on the rest but take a look at this...http://www.microsoft.com/windowsvista/getready/editions/default.mspx
the music and sounds in vista will be totally different aswell, with the music being composed by robert fripp of the legendary band "king crimson"
so finally ,in my opinion vista will take a few years for users to come round to letting go of xp,as most of us have used xp for the last 6 years, but as we upgrade and our p.c,s become powerfull enough to run vista we will finally migrate to the operating system
i still think they could of thought of a better name, but vista(which means "veiw") ,is slowly becoming a decent name
good luck

Its a big change in the security aspect there r lot basic upgrade in term of security, although it has a very bit cosmetic make over its not very demanding, i mean it works equally fast as XP, yeah its minimum requirements are really high.
It has lots of bug, its media player cause lots of error. many software dose not work with it even in the computability mode.
the drivers have to be updated, not all xp drivers work with vista
it may need about 8 months to get better
but i think its not worth the price...

based upon the beta, it looks like it will be good assuming the bugs get worked out, however, that could take anywhere from 2months to a year, deopending on how efficient microsoft decides to be.once everything runs smoothly, it should be a very good os (although somewhat demanding in terms of hardware)
