No they cannot; they are legally obliged to pay you for the hours that you worked. However, they are entitled to keep any holiday pay that you accrued in lieu of notice. (I did the same a few years ago so that's how I know.

I am not sure about this but I believe that they are entitled to keep it.
As you were paid monthly, I assume it is a permanent job that you walked out of, and that you were on a one-month notice period.
Some people are paid mid-month, which is usually two weeks in arrears and two weeks in advance. If this situation applied to you, you would probably end up owing the company money (as they had paid you in advance).
Some people are paid end-of-month, which is usually four weeks in arrears, and this would mean that you wouldn't owe them anything, but you wouldn't get paid either as you hadn't worked your notice.
But if you didn't have a contract and therefore didn't have an official notice period, then you will be entitled to be paid for whatever time you worked.
I'm not totally sure about all of this so I advise that you check with your local Citizen's Advice Bureau, but don't get your hopes up :-(

By law they are not allowed to keep any wages for the hours that you have already worked.
What they may do is deduct the amount of outstanding holiday that you have not worked yet, (assuming that you have taken it).
You are not to be out of pocket by walking out of a job although you lose all potential bonuses and references, (including holiday owed).
Hope this makes sense.
In a nutshell - you can get your money back.

If you have worked the hours you are entitled to be paid for them. The only way they can withhold payment is if it was written into your contract that they could do so if the notice period was not worked in full. Check your contract.

the ppl above are right your legally entitled to your pay, minus any hours owed!
but i think if you didn't give any notice to your leaving there allowed to withhold pay for a month!
