For example---Do you think our government should stop subsidizing corn? Maybe stop the sponsorship of feeding our kids processed foods in school cafeterias? (Government cheese, mystery meat, etc...)Do you think this problem is big enough to attack politically? What do you think should be done, if anything?

OK---for those of you who say the government shouldn't be involved---it already is---subsidizing corn and serving American cheese. Do you think the government should get out of the food business completely?

Nooooo Only responsible parenting can solve this problem. The government can help by offering nutritious meals at lunch but this will never happen because of the lobbyists for the junk food.

The government doesn't need to legislate any more of our lives, they do it enough already. But the schools have an obligation to the kids: from the early grades onward there should be compulsory exercise programs, classes in nutrition, and prohibition of junk foods and candy sold at school. Allowing the kids to become unfit and overweight is a form of neglect.

The problem with obesity, and many other things, is that Americans want Uncle Sam to take care of them.
Americans don't want to be held responsible for their own actions. Obese people want to blame anyone but themselves for their being fat. People need to get of their buts and get some exercise and make sure that their kids are getting enough. Legislation is not the answer to the fattening of our people, taking charge of ones own life is.

I think the government is ALREADY involved enough in our day to day lives. It's the parents responsibility to instill proper diet and health habits in children, not the governments.

What you don't realize is the more power you give the government, the more blurred the lines become. Then what's to stop them from regulating everything we do, from who we talk to, what we watch, what we see, what we hear, what we eat ... it's never ending. They've already overstepped their boundaries numerous times because people keep giving them power they don't have. Talk like this is flat out dangerous, because the last thing they need is MORE power and control over our day to day lives.

sounds impractical but would help.

The government is already making changes by banning the use of transfat in many food chains and products! Alot of people will say this is wrong and government doesn't have a right to make these changes but I think it is a good idea!

If you really want to reduce obesity in this country, hand out food stamps to the welfare recipients for health food restaurants instead of giving them money. All they do is spend it on Mickey D's, cheap beer and potato chips.

Yes, the government could stop it. But we sure as hell don't want them to take that much control of our lives.
