How does it feel to be ripped off by those that we have allowed to make the rules for us. While we were asleep, those in government have made their own job security, retirement and health care plans which far exceed anything in the private sector, all at our expense. We can only blame ourselves for not paying any attention as recently they have bankrupted those programs to protect the rest of us, such as social security and medicare. We have proved the old adage that there are suckers born every minute!

First Social Security is NOT a retirement plan. The people working today (presumably you and I) are paying the benefits for the people retired now. Which is why the system is (or will soon be) in dire straits. More on this later.

It kind of bothers me because while government employees have there own plan and don't pay into it (social security), they are eligible for other benefits and services that are paid for when we "borrow" from the trust fund.

You see when it was created there was 1 recipient for about every 13 or so workers (low social security payroll taxes) by the 70 we were at about 1:7 (higher taxes but manageable). By the time 60 - 70% of the Baby-boomers are collecting w could be near 1:2 (most of your payroll taxes would go to FICA).

Since Social Security is a generational contract (and not as most seem to think a retirement plan), it would seem that federal employees have as much obligation to contribute to and handle the upcoming burden of social security recipients as say I did as an active duty soldier.

They are a privileged class which is why the SS system is going broke. The federal retirement system which is what they have instead of SS is quite lavish with benefits. Meanwhile, they plot to make SS a means-tested program. I think we need a third political party,a constitutional convention, or some nation-wide strikes by the middle class.

I think that's fine. None of us should be required to be in any old age plan like Social Security.

They should be required to participate, but that is probably not going to happen. Those in Congress aren't going to harm themselves by participating in a program that we peons have to deal with.
