I saw a documentary on PBS last Fall about the working poor. It highlighted many single mothers who have to work and get public assistance such as food stamps and rent subsidies also.
It is an unfortunate and unfair sitiuation to be in also. While most of the mothers were going back to school full time to get them out of minimum wage jobs, once they received even a .50 raise, their benefits were cut, forcing them to make decisions such as staying on public assistance and quitting school, or working two and sometimes three jobs to make ends meet.
Unfortunately our public assistance system keeps people on public assistance and doesn't want them to get ahead.

I'm linking you to an interesting article on the Straight Dope that tackles the wage gap myth. One of the major points it makes is that women tend to take off work to have children. They may come back after maternity leave expires, but then it's likely that they've lost chances to earn a higher place in the company. Also, women with children tend to take more part-time jobs or make use of "flex-time" (that is, working more flexible hours) than women who have no children.
So yes, in a nutshell, they make more money because they have more time. Children are a huge responsibility, and they can make a profound impact on everything you do in life, including your job.

They make the same amount of money but don't have the same amount in the bank. Women w/children have to pay out a heck of alot more

in my opinion, the women with no children will have it easier to advance and therefore make more money sooner. because they are flexible...able to travel on a moment's notice, can work longer hours and on the weekends, etc...they will have more opportunities to prove themselves in the office without any "i have to get a sitter" moments.

This can go both ways.
I've seen employers prefer "mothers" because they are seen as very responsible, by managing a family. (with great pay-medical field)
But, I've also seen employers prefer "women w/no children" due to their schedules for hours needed to work. (with great pay-management consultants)
It would depend on the field area of work.
