For the last few days, my 7 month old has been choking on water and juice. REALLY badly. She gets scared, starts gasping for air, cant breathe, and eventually starts crying & coughing (thank God). I thought maybe the sippy cup was bringing the fluid out too quickly for her, so I tried a bottle. Same thing happened. For now I've cut out extra fluids all together. She is still breastfeeding, and does not have this problem with the breast. Any suggestions?

All babies have that problem. I don't know why it happens, but your baby probably just gets scared by it. I have an 18month old and she still chokes on juice and water. I just watch her when she's drinking those liquids. I believe it's because they are so thin. Your breast milk it thicker then juice and water.

There is nothing to be worried about just give her the juice and watch her and when she's drinking too much pull it out let her breathe and give her some more. I do that with my daughter.

Too calm here down when she's choking I just make sounds like i'm clearing my throat and pat her back and talk softly so she doesn't get any more startled.

If she is breastfeeding normally and not choking on breatmilk, there is probably no cause for concern. Water and juice are different in consistency and viscosity, so it's probably just new to her. Honestly, she doesn't need the water at all if she is breastfeeding. And the juice is just extra sugar and calories that you really don't want to introduce to an infant anyway. Just stick with breastmilk for now, but bring up the subject at her next appointment. Good luck!

My son is nearly a year old and it started at about 6 months ago, he chokes quite a few times when drinking juice/water i thought it was the teat i was using so i changed to a slower flowing teat and it didn't make a difference. It just seems as if it catches his breath whilst drinking and chokes, its just like us when we breath and drink/swallow at the same time and choke.

possible the "valve" in her throat is not working properly hince why thicker liquids can go down easier. Take her to her pediatrician and let them monitor her.
