Can anyone tell me a knitting stitch that is quite open, a bit more like small crochet I suppose rather than a tight knit. I want to knit myself a shawl and want the stitch quite open. Thanks.

put your needle in the stitch wrap the wool once round the outside of both needles then knit the stitch as you would normally bring the wrapped wool into the stitch foll a row of these stitches with a plan row then repeat.
This gives a Lacey effect, you can make the lace more open by taking the wool round twice before you knit the stitch

Use large knitting needles, and a pretty yarn, with a simple shawl pattern. It's easy, fast and fun. The stitch will appear more open if you're using large needles.

Here is a pretty shawl/wrap pattern online:

You could also wrap the yarn around the needle a couple of times after completing each stitch. On the way back, don't work the "wraparounds", just pull them off the needle, and work the real stitch instead.

You will be fine with a normal stocking stitch - the trick is to use loose tension and large needles.

Try going to HGTV website and looking in the Knitty Gritty section.

Try doing a lacy stitch, (k1,yfwd,k2tog,k1, rep to end, next row p, next row k2,yfwd,k2tog,k1 etc, so the holes are not above each other.) Good luck.
