you have a lot of good answers and one or two that don't give you enough info. if you have a single handle faucet shower and the diverter is on the spout, check the bottom of the of it for a screw hole. there is a set screw there that is tightened to a copper pipe. you will need an allen wrench, a six sided metal rod, to loosen it. do not turn it so much that it falls out, it's real small and could go down the drain. just to be safe close the drain and then cover it with a towel. 1/2-1 turn should be enough to let you slide the spout off of the pipe. it might not be a repairable item and you will just need to replace it. take note of the brand of the water valve(s) and then take the spout to a plumbing supply house that sells that brand. good luck and hope this helps.

depending on whether your faucet is 1 2 or 3 handled would help but i'll tell ya how to fix all 3 ok if it's 3 handle you have a diverter stem it's the center knob, carefully remove handle, then remove the stem by unscrewing the stem (depending on how old it is it may have a packing nut and then a section that looks like a nut but is part of the stem you'll want to use the one farthest back in the wall) or there may be just one if it is a newer faucet. ok pull stem out and take to home depot or hardware store buy exact part and reinstall. if it's 2 handles this is easy you just need a new diverter tub spout unscrew (or unbolt if slip-fit) and take to store buy exactly what you have. if your spout is threaded use teflon tape 5x around pipe threads and a light coating of pipe thread compuond (pipe dope). If it's a single handle then you have a push button diverter to fix you must remove handle and trim plate then unscrew push button from tub/shower faucet take to store buy EXACT NAME BRAND PART replacement parts from some off-brand companies will not last the test of time. always buy replacement parts from the same maufacturer of your fixtures to keep up quality

your diverter is broken, that is what switches the water from the tub spout to the shower head. unless you are a real handy do-it-your-selfer, you may want to enlist some help or hire a plumber to take care of it for you.
