I think if he finishes his career in Detroit, which I hope he'll do
and keeps his level of play up, They might retire his number, but I don't think it will be right away like they did Stevie.
Lidstrom is a great player and definite HOFer. But hasn't done what Stevie has for the organization.

I am starting to feel that the idea of retiring numbers is getting ridiculous. At the same time if anyone deserves this honor Lidstrom sure does.... he has revolutionized the defense and has basically defined the modern defenseman. Lidstrom was more important than Osgood or Hasek for their championships. Lidstrom controlled the game more than any other skater in the years that the Wings took their championships with him on the roster. A defenseman like Lidstrom could very well have a trophy or a award named for him for the entire league one day if they wanted to expand the awards. BQ: beer... sierra nevada or sam adams or guiness; just depends

Without much doubt when Lidstrom hangs up the skates they will reward him with a jersey retirement as well. The Wings management is very wise and know that the fans would appreciate seeing Lidstroms name in the rafters with the other Wing greats after he retires. It just wouldnt be right to see the #5 jersey going up and down the ice after he retires (and who would want the pressure of living up to those standards?) How lucky we Wing fans are to have seen 2 of the games elites play for so long and even better to have 2 players that are as decent of men as they are hockey players.

Why not? He's been great for them for about 10 seasons now, right? Looking around the landscape of defensemen in the NHL, no one else is more deserving of having his number retired, other than Brian Leetch in New York.

lidstrom's game is very similar to ray bourque's. they both play outstanding defense, have a high offensive capability, and dont need to bring physicality to their game to play great defense. throw in the fact that the both been with the same team for the vast majority of their careers, and why not? would you doubt that ray bourque's number should be next to bobby orr's?

Definitely. How many Norris trophies did he have in a row? Three? The guy's a hall of famer the moment he becomes eligible.

If he keeps his level of play as high as it has been, and ends with a good, long career in Detroit, I think they should.
