becaue airlines are the current bete noir of the government AND self style denvironmentalists
because Ryan Air is growwing rapidly these people see Ryan Air as a problem... actually its a canard.. Ryan Airs fleet ,aside from Easyjet is probably the most recent (read fuel efficient). Of the long haul airlines BA's is probably average.. most of the US fleet is pretty old (read inefficient)
its a good tactic by the government as it has failed to come to grips with the power generation issue. it deflects criticism form where the problem lies to soemthing that they and the pressure groups can zoom in on.
The UK has just closed two nuclear power stations.. gernerating around 2.5 to 4% of the UK elecricity requirement (or put another way the same as the amount of wind power plant installed inthe last 15 years) that shortfall will be made up by burning fossil fuels (coal, gas & oil)... they have singularly failed to deal with the looming energy crisies that is going to hit this country (around 35..40% of the exsiting capacity is being phased out (too old, too innefficent).. most of that is nuceaelr capacity.
the lead time on new power plant is 10..15 years, the problem is 5..10 years off.
As usual its easy for politicians to point a fingure of blame, encourage a feeling of smug outrage in the public that 'theres the problem.. its not us.......)

Oh get a life.. no-one is having a go at Ryanair simply because its an Irsh company. Do you think so many people call Bono a self-righteous plonker simply because of where he was born???
The Enviroment Minister did in fact criticise British Airways as well, stating they were "only just about playing ball" over carbon emissions. And if you understand what he said, you will appreciate that he is not criticising Ryanair per se, but their CEO Micheal O'Leary, who quite clearly doesnt give a damn about anything other than his own personal profits..and if you dont believe that then ask someone who has the misfortune to work for him.

Ryanair is run by a crook. He's not a crook because he's Irish, he's a crook because he's greedy. They treat their staff like dirt and their passengers as cash cows.
EastJet works. The staff have to work hard, but at least Stelios pays them a resonable rate for the job. BA run an airline that suits the passengers rather than the bank balance.
So come off your high horse. Ireland has a lot of great things going for it. Ryanair ain't one of them and it is certainly not worth playing the race card for.
