Regardless of your race, you should be proud to be who you are. My ex was Colombian and he was proud. My boyfriend is Filipino, and he speaks Spanish fluently, his whole family does, I met them and I was surprised because I didn't know before that Philippines was a Spanish colony, and he's proud to be of part of the Spanish-speaking community, I don't think ANONYMOUS above should pigeonhole anybody, because even within certain countries, there are people of the same nationality with different backgrounds. Not all people in Latin America speak Spanish, there are many native groups that only speak their indigenous language, and i suppose like in the Philippines since it was a Spanish colony, there are those that speak Spanish, and those that don't. Not all Latinos are white, there are black Latinos as well, and indigenous Latinos, and Latinos of Chinese and Japanese ancestry, and I even read in article online that many Mexicans are actually of Filipino descent, because in the west of Mexico especially Oaxaca City, there are entire towns and districts of Mexicans of Filipino descent since many Filipinos (I suppose a mix of Malay and Spanish mestizos, but I have to assume that they were mestizo since historically, they had more money than pure natives just like all over Latin America) traveled there during Spanish times.

but most Americans don't know that Latinos can be of any color, they think "Latino" is a race, and they think all Latinos have the typical "hispanic look" of dark hair, dark eyes, tan skin, which it's not, it's an ETHNICITY. Filipino is the same I think, there is no Filipino race, it's an ethnicity made up of different groups Spanish malay, just like Latinos are NOT A SINGLE RACE, we're a mix of so many races, of the whole world, white, black, indian, and asian. Brazilians too.
What I think is negative is when we Latinos tend to disqualify others as "not Latino enough" and always excluding certain people or groups, and not to mention the racism that exists in Latin America against anyone who's not white-looking, and racism against Latinos of Asian descent. That's not productive either, because I think, if they have Spanish influence or grew up speaking Spanish like the Japanese Latinos in Peru or Uruguay, the mixed Chinese-Latinos in Mexico and Cuba, and the Filipinos in Filipinas, than we should include them as Latino also, because then that's Latino power and a positive attitude.
There are many Latinos of Asian descent, Enrique Iglesias, Julio Iglesias, Jr. y Chabeli son de madre filipina, el padre de Barbara Mori es japones, Shaila Durcal, la hija de Rocio Durcal, es de padre filipino (Junior Morales, de Los Brincos). Hay muchos, no aguanto los racistas, especialmente si son latinos, en mi experiencia, la mayoria de los racistas de raices latinas son los mexicanos y los puertorriqueños, que tontos! de verdad y que estupidez, porque now you've become just as racist as the anglos are, how pathetic.
Or like Christina Aguilera or Cameron Diaz, they want to be recognized as Latina, but most Latinos call them "fake Latinos." WHY? Or Filipinos, I didn't know before, but I now I know now, there are Filipinos that don't speak Spanish and have more Asian culture, and there are those that do and they usually have more of a connection with Spanish culture, and they also look more like Latinos since they have Spanish blood, my boyfriend is Filipino but he has white skin, green eyes, and light brown hair, I would've thought he was a Spaniard if he didn't tell me he was Filipino. They have Latin blood, why exclude anyone who wants to be recognized as Latino regardless of racial background or if they're part Anglo-American, that's only making the situation worse in the US for Latinos when we exclude people. Lots of Latinos because they grew up in USA, they get influenced by racism and get a negative attitude about a lot of things. Be proud of who you are and stop with the negative attitudes. ciao besitos a todo el mundo, latino, anglo, asiatico, todos, one world

maybe its because of what some latinos have done. some people think all latinos are criminals, which is not true. even though some latinos are criminals, other races are not perfect. or because they are just ignorant. im proud to be a latina, no matter what, and its never going to change

well the same goes to asians, blacks, and other minorities in this country. u have some people who wanna be white more than anything and arent proud of their race because of how their race is portrayed. blacks and then hispanics have the worst reputations. asians are atleast seen as smart. the media portrays our races in bad light almost all the time, if u keep seeing that image u are almost bound to believe it. i mean if u are told constantly u are a low life piece of ****, u will start to believe it, but people have to be smarter than that MIND VIRUSES. u obviously dont buy into that and neither do i, u see the good and dont pay attention to the negative. i believe we all need to do that.
also to the one kid, ur race isnt american, its ur nationality. also mexican is a form of latino/hispanic. ur white and hispanic

It could be several things like fitting in with a certain crowd, not being about to speak spanish, not knowing their culture. Although mostly what I have found is to assimulate. For example growing up my mom didn't think we needed to learn how to speak spanish and enforced alot of "american" traditions. My father on the other had felt differently. So now me and brother have more of a connection with our Puerto Rican side then our Cuban. As someone pointed its how you are raised but I've also seen people steer away from their culture to fit in.

if the 'people' you refer are Filipinos then they should be embarrassed to be Latino 'cause they are Asians. But when you Mexicans, Cubans, Braziians etc., then why should they be ashamed of their rich heritage. I am a Filipino and my name is in Spanish but i can't speak Spanish, or i know some loan words, though. But i must say i'm not Latino 'cause i don't look lke one and I'm from South-east Asia.

Perhaps they don't know the good side of being Latino yet. I'm sure when they grow older, they'll see that in every being, there are always beautiful things that exist in them.

I don't know. Maybe they live in places where Latinos are treated badly or there just aren't a lot of them in the area.
