Hmmm. I know typically they are classified as Metal, but that always makes me think of Metallica, and these two simply should not be put together. I am also somewhat offended by the fact you compare them to Pink Floyd (who I feel is completely overrated and sub-par).
The fact of the matter is that, for me, TOOL belongs in a class by itself! If I have to look in the Metal or Hard Rock section to find them, then so be it. I agree that Experimental describes them well also. They are just far and away the most unique and original sound out there!
