Sounds a little biased. Imperialists are what Americans are called in a derogatory fashion, akin to the term "crusaders" because we take an interest in world affairs. Dictionary.com defines imperialism as "the policy of extending the rule or authority of an empire or nation over foreign countries, or of acquiring and holding colonies and dependencies." Realistically, is there any country other than the US where what George W. Bush says becomes law? Not really. Was there ever such a time? Up until WWII, the US had a policy of non-interference until we got bombed.
Your assignment seems really one-sided and a smidgeon anti-American. Do you have some more details?

Turn on CNN and you can watch it happening in real time.
The US spins imperialism a bit differently than empires in the past. We don't necessarily occupy other countries with an army - although obviously, we are not opposed to that - we control other countries through the sometimes seemingly invisible world of economics. A good portion of that comes through loans to various nations from World Bank and the IMF.
You will dig up a lot of information on US imperialism if you focus on Central and South America and the Middle East, of course. Look specifically at present day Bolivia, Panama in the 1980's, and Iran -pre1979 Islamic Revolution. Those are just a few suggestions, but the well is much deeper than that.
And it doesn't seem like something a liberal teacher would suggest, it seems like a topic a good teacher would suggest.
It's not one sided, it's calling a duck a duck. And it's certainly not anti-American, as challenging the status quo, promotion of free thinking and the exchange of ideas are about as American as apple pie.
America is an imperial power - there were others before, there will be others after.

You must have a liberal anti-American teacher - especially if you live in the US yourself.
