Percents for instance? What's 30% of 100? How do percents work? This is really embarrassing.

The term "per cent" means "fraction of one hundred". So 30% of 100 is just 30. 45% of 100 is 45. That's the easy part.

You are interested usually in 30% of 80 or some other number besides 100. In this case, write the per cent as the decimal fraction of 100 that it represents: 30% = .30 This is now the multiplier you use. Think of the word "of" as "times".

So 30% of 80 is just .30 x 80 = 24. So 24 is 30% of 80.

"Per cent" means "Parts per hundred."

30 parts per hundred of 100 is - come on now, I believe in you!

Percents are very easy - you just multiply by the "decimal" version of the number.

Other examples:
10 percent of 100 = 0.10 *100 = 10

10 percent of 50 = 0.10* 50 = 5
110 percent of 50 = 1.10 *50 = 55

25 percent of 100 = 0.25 * 100 = 25

% means divided by 100
30%=30/100 or .3

I have known plenty. I remember in 1976 election night, NBC's anchor John Chancellor getting thoroughly confused by the concept of %. He was a college graduate & allegedly 1 of the countries premier broadcast journalists.
At least you have a lot of company.
