Before you read more of my response, don't expect to sell your book just because you and your family and friends think its good. It might well be, but a publisher is much more critical than you or your friends. That said.

Advances and royalties vary as much as publishers vary.

Generally a book sold to a big publisher will get a larger advance and better contract than at a smaller publisher. Remember the the larger the advance the longer it will take to work it off with royaltiy payments. AND a new author will also have to do a lot of self publicity, interviews on local TV and radio, submit articles to the newspapers Book section, do book signings, speak to any group that will let you attend. Pass out bookmarks and brochures totting the good things about your book. Have reviews posted on the internet, and start your own website (not just a blog, a website). These are the things that the Advance is to pay for.

As to details in contracts, royalties etc. That's why is recommended that you have an agent (yes they are hard to to get but not impossible). Join a writers group that has conferences that you can attend. Find a subject that you like to take about and that you are learned in, and offer to sit on a panel or give a lecture on that subject, or just attend and do a lot of strong networking. Talk to other writers, Yes the unpublished too, you never know where you might find a friend that can help you somewhere done the line, the editors, agents, and speakers. take brochures, copies of your book, bookmarks, and business cards. make the freebees available and let everyone know that you have books with you (if anyone asks) and of course autograph the book.

because of the fact Stephenie Meyer did it! Why won't be in a position to they? fact learn, i would not be all that shocked if a style of young human beings surely *did* get their crap printed. (*ahem* i understand this all sounds slightly ironic, because of the fact that i surely am a young person....) merely the different day, i grew to become into in Barns & Noble and observed a e book that grew to become into *completely* written in chat talk. no longer a single be conscious in it grew to become into spelled properly, and there have been no appropriate punctuation marks. Grammatical blunders crawling by way of and around this factor like cockroaches. i grew to become into disgusted. the belief the something like that would desire to be printed, and human beings could surely purchase it and *examine* it! i do no longer undergo in ideas the identify of the e book, in spite of the undeniable fact that it grew to become into all pink and had a style of :) faces on it. Urgh. I merely would desire to contemplate whether a number of those publishers actually have a satisfaction. How can absolutely everyone sell books like that throughout uncomplicated terms for the sake of money? it is like all of them bought their souls to the devil. besides, i surely frequently merely write for relaxing. of direction it is my dream to a minimum of sooner or later be on the ny Time's superb advertising record, yet i'm additionally a tad bit lifelike. interior the imply time, I merely want to *end* writing certainly one of my books, then edit till i'm chuffed. I won't dare think of approximately sending something in to a writer till i'm confident that i will nevertheless have a satisfaction as quickly because it is completed. @Sky- i'm afriad i don't understand your good judgment. A author is in uncomplicated terms a author/stable author in the event that they have written between 500 and 1500+ pages? What does that make Truman Capote? Jane Austen? Natalie Babbitt? Are they simply choose-to-be-writers? there's no magic age or website quantity that unexpectedly makes you a "genuine author." Even people who suck at writing are nevertheless writers because of the fact a author is somebody who does merely that: writes.
