Your question has an error frequently repeated in that it is assumed that "yourself" and "others" are separate.

This dichotomy is false and leads to wrong conclusions.

In time you will come to realize that we are all not just the same in principle but we are the same literally.

Ergo, your question is rendered mute as either choice is equal.

Others, of course.

Not everyone is capable of getting the help that they need, of fighting the fights that need to be fought.

If I am capable of doing this, I will. Generally, I'm helping myself at the same time, in any number of ways.

"The Impossible Dream"
from MAN OF LA MANCHA (1972)
music by Mitch Leigh and lyrics by Joe Darion
"The Impossible Dream" (a .MP3 file courtesy MGM).

To dream the impossible dream
To fight the unbeatable foe
To bear with unbearable sorrow
To run where the brave dare not go
To right the unrightable wrong
To love pure and chaste from afar
To try when your arms are too weary
To reach the unreachable star

This is my quest
To follow that star
No matter how hopeless
No matter how far

To fight for the right
Without question or pause
To be willing to march into Hell
For a heavenly cause

And I know if I'll only be true
To this glorious quest
That my heart will lie peaceful and calm
When I'm laid to my rest

And the world will be better for this
That one man, scorned and covered with scars
Still strove with his last ounce of courage
To reach the unreachable star

I always try to put others first. Why? because that's how it should be and that's just how I am. I like to help others

Others, it's in the Brownie Code ;P

But seriously, always others because if you're a selfish person then they're likely to help you back in return haha.

And I also want to get into heaven when I die!

Others because if you put yourself first you'll get nothing and you'll be a selfish person. If you put others first you'll always have a great additude and you'll be blessed.

Others.

If I put others first, I will inspire them to do the same, and eventually, someone will put my needs before his, and I will put his before mine.

In this way we will all eventually have someone putting our needs before his.

If you put yourself before everyone else, you kind of get screwed because nobody will want to help you; he's busy helping himself.
