I've read it, and I liked some of it, but other parts really bothered me. if you're looking for a quick "dirty book", look elsewhere. Although it is very kinky, it is more psychological than smutty. This is a very old-fashioned and literary exploration of dominance and submission. Those were the parts I liked. (!) What I didn't like was the general attitude towards women. The book, to me, seemed to be based on the idea that all women should be submissive to men, it is their proper role. If you believe that people should be able to choose their role in a relationship (whether kinky, sexual or simply social) based on preference, not gender, then try Nine and a Half Weeks by Elizabeth MacNeil for a woman who chooses submission. Still, it's not exactly liberated.

The Story of O is one of the most extreme books I have ever read. The introduction claims that the reader will be changed by it, and I believe this is true. If you have an interest in BDSM sexuality, or in the history of erotic literature, you will peobably find it interesting. It is, as some have already commented, a bit intellectual and pays quite a bit of attention to psychological perspectives.

It is funny you should ask. I randomly picked it up last week, and am about halfway through it now. I wouldn't exactly describe it as a pleasant read, but it is definitely interesting. The subject matter is extremely graphic and I repeatedly find myself cringing. That said, though, I have found myself rather involved in the story. I am very curious to see where the ending will lead.

(Side note: I watched part of a documentary concerning this book. I was rather disturbed to discover that this novel was written by a woman as a gift to her lover).

I liked it very much. I thought it was an interesting view on freedom of choice. Yes, it's erotic (not porn) and, yes, it is disturbing at times, but it was great brain food. And it is also very interesting how the author (a woman) manages to describe to most outrageous situations without using a single vulgar word throughout the whole book.

Unfortunatly, I did read it. Years ago. How anyone can find anything in it worth the price of the paper its printed on is beyond me. I am not easily riled. I have read my fair share of racy material...but this book? Ugh...I can't even find a word to describe how much I hated it. Had it not been for the fact that the reading was related to a course I took, I would never have gone past the first 100 words!

I saw the movie. the girl's name is "O" because that is her first initial, and since it a story about her sex life, they didn't use her whole name. at the end of the movie, the guy that she is with burns the back of her hand with a car cigarette lighter, leaving a permanent "O" on her.

I read it as a teenager. And I shouldn't have. It was pretty disturbing and it kind of colored my sex life in unhealthy ways.
