The AMD Turion Processors are very solid, but also are lower end than the current generation of Intel processors. They far surpass the older Pentium M type processors but still are in the shadow of the Core Duo and Core 2 Duo.
The Core Duo and Pentium M are 32 bit only however. But Turion and Core 2 Duo are 64-bit.
Also, since this is a laptop processor, you most likely will NOT have to make use of 64-bit functionality and probably are using a 32-bit operating system. The only REAL use of a 64-bit operating system is to be able to access over 4 GB of memory. Great for workstations and servers only at the moment.
My recommendation based on experience:
Go for Core 2 Duo if you want top performance.
Go for Turion64 x2 if you want nearly Core (1) Duo level (mid-level) performance and a good price.
Also, since you are only using it for office... come to think of it... the Turion is MORE than enough for Office =)
Office is barely processor intensive. You can save money by even just getting the single core Turion64.

AMD processors are better than Intel's. But the recent Core 2 Duo is coming out to be a better processor. So, go for Core 2 Duo rather than Core Duo or go for AMD dual core, which is better than Core Duo. However, for running MS Office, any processor would give more or less same performance with unnoticeable difference. Hope it would help...

I would go with an AMD dual core. If dual core is not possible, go with Intel. Core 2 Duo has been proven a lower power consumption, however, it doesn't go very much faster than previous versions of the processor. PowerPoint uses a lot of memory, so get at least 1 GB. Finally, see if you really have to get a new PC, and if you don't, wait for Windows Vista, the next big step, to come out (Jan 30, 2007). It's much better.

The better processor could be the new Intel Core 2 Duo models... but if all you're going to run is office then look at other qualities in the system. Dell, IBM and Toshiba make the most reliable laptops and there are big differences between the models offered by just those three. Think what's important to you; performance, portability (size and weight) or price?

The new Intel core (2) duo are very good but if you're only using Office it won't matter which processor.

There isn't any huge difference between AMD and Intel. While Intel is more popular than AMD, AMD tends to run very fast. My Laptop has an AMD Turion 64 w/dual core and its very fast.
