Generally a scanner is going to produce a better image to work from digitally than a camera.
If you do line drawings, you can also convert them to vector format which gives you lots of options down the road.
What is the intended use of the digital image once you have it?

There are A3 scanners, there may even be A2 for all I know..
but agree probably best to do the repro using a camera. tkae as many shots as you can in different light.
given the size of the original images it may be best toget it doen professionally

How about scanning them bit by bit, then putting the jigsaw together with paint shop pro.
