I have heard that giving my son an oatmeal bath to help with his eczema will stop his itching. Is this true and how would I go about giving it to him (type of oatmeal, how much, how long, how often)?

For oatmeal bath, use a little muslin tea bag (or make your own) w/ drawstring. Pulverize the rolled oats in blender or use quick oats. Run very hot water over, to activate the oats, then bathe in plain, tepid water, using the sachet gently like a washcloth. Do not use soap. Do this twice weekly.

Use only soothing, natural lotions (no mineral oil) from natural food stores. Chickweed is helpful, applied as a poultice.

Note: a study at the U of Manchester, England, found that children w/ eczema had significantly low levels of zinc in their bloodstream. (British Journal of Dermatology, 1984, 111, 597) Zinc is necessary for metabolism of essential fatty acids (EFAs). Some relief is found by supplementing with Evening Primrose oil, for Omega 6 fatty acids. Supplement w/ 15 mg. Zinc daily; Bioflavinoids (found in Vitamin C aisle) help w/ allergic reaction.

Go to a herbal store, like GNC and they'll have the soaps and bath mixes for this. I don't think the oatmeal you buy in the grocery store is the same thing as what they have for skin care.

I mean it's the same plant, but I think it's processed differently to be used for skin care versus eating.

Another thing that helps with eczema is Essential Fatty Acids, or Fish Oil, or Omega 3 (all the same thing). Take orally.

Try adding baking soda to tub water - remember to treat the cause not the symptom

Use neem oil like lotion and rub it in gently wherever there is eczema. he will notice an immediate difference. I had a friend who had eczema terribly and neem cured hers. she also takes neem bark capsules. It is from India and it is a god send!
