A filler is just a episode of a show that has nothing to do with the story line. Like in alot of the anime shows there are fillers. Some people get really pissed about them, I don't really care to much.

A filler is an episode in an anime that doesn't follow the manga/ story. The writers usually do this to let the manga grow a little or to catch-up on their own work.

Another definition for filler refers to comic book and trading card collecting. Say you're putting together a run of X-Men comics from issue #94 to issue #175 in Very Fine / Near Mint condition. Issue #94 is a fairly pricey issue and the only one you need so you buy one in Good condition just to complete your sequence until you can find one in a comparable grade to the rest of your collection. That would be known as a "filler" issue. Sometimes also called a "reader" issue.

A filler is an episode that has no real effect on the current story arc.

Lets say from the first episode to like the 20th some kid is trying to rescue his mom, and all 20 episodes would have something to do with rescuing her. A filler episode would have nothing to do with it all, like he would go to a movie and meet a new friend or something.

Its used to either extend a series run or to give the writers time to develop the main story - while still putting out episodes.

A filler is an episode that doesn't effect the main story, either as taking a break from it to buy the characters time to get to their next destination or to develop the characters.
