I received a cute alphabet animal puzzle for Christmas. I could figure out everything else (from alligator to zebra), but not the "X".

Although there aren't many, there are some animals whose common names start with an X, without having to resort to scientific names:

There is the X-ray fish, and the X-ray tetra, as well as the Xeric ambersnail.

There are several critters named after a naturalist named Xantus, so there are the Xantus leaf-toed gecko, Xantus swimming crab, Xantus' murrelet (a type of bird), and Xantus's hummingbird.

There are also critters named after localities that start with an X (mostly in China), such as the Xingu corydoras, Xingu river ray, and the Xinjiang ground-jay.

Depends on what taxonomic level you want-but none in the common tongue

If you want to work with above species divisions in scientific taxonomic language on the other hand then there are plenty starting with x -as detailed by Koral-

Xenarthra are an ORDER - (armadillos, etc)
Xiphias are a FAMILY (swordfish)
Xenox id a bird GENUS-

eg there are several xenops species for example xenops minutans xenops rutilans etc etc etc
