First, the Giants didn't lose Ray Durham...he resigned for two more years I believe.

I think the team will be solid, like they were the past two years, but will still fall short of any realistic playoff berth. The Dodgers and Padres are too solid for the Giants too compete with. The Diamondbacks have one of the best up-and-coming, young squads in all of baseball and even the Rockies have made strides the past few seasons.

Essentially, all the Giants did was swap out some old parts for some more old parts. Roberts will give a good presence at the top of the lineup as a lead-off hitter and finally Randy Winn can move down in the order. Aurilia should be a modest addition at best, he has proven in his previous stint with the Giants and his run with the Mariners that his days as a full-time player should be behind him. Molina offers some reliability at the backstop, but is largely an overpriced version of what they had with Eliezer Alfonzo behind the dish. Losing Alou hurts because it further damages any sort of protection Bonds had in the lineup. Pedro Feliz and Ray Durham aren't exactly a powerful enough combo to ensure Bonds doesn't get walked 600 times next season.

Bochy is a solid manager, but is walking into a bit of a firestorm in San Francisco. He never had to deal with controversy and media scrutiny like he will now when he was in San Diego. Losing Scmidt hurts because he is now pitching for the arch-rival Dodgers and he was an innings eater who had some lightning stuff when he was healthy, but health has been a concern. Zito offers roughly the same output in my opinion. He has diminishing speed on his fastball, but his big hooking curve is still wicked as ever. I'd expect him to have comparable numbers to Schmidt's numbers in San Francisco.

All-in-all, I'd say the D-Backs are still a year or so off from being a solid contender and that puts the Giants squarely in line for another third place finish and toying with the Mild-Card until at least August.

1. They don't have Bonds yet. He has not signed. They are having serious complications with his contract do to the Balco case.

2. The only up side from Zito coming on board is that he's a lefty.
He may win 2 to 4 more games than Schmidt did. Not worth what they paid.

3. Alou is a good hitter but is a 40 year old outfielder who is constantly on and off of the DL.

Overall the Giants will be about the same they were last year with some slight improvement in the win column.

They are basically, the same team, with a better pitcher. But not enough to compite in the division, because the Dodgers are the team to beat and the Diamondbacks, with Johnson happy, will be better than the Giants. Bonds will be a distraction, and he´s not as good as you think.

Bottom line: The Giants have Barry Bonds on their roster. The fans will come to watch the home run chase, and the team will fail to make the playoffs.

Bonds is the Black Hole of Frisco. Success doesn't follow the teams that have him on the roster.

The Giants have a bunch of grandpas playing for them. Their team is soooooo old. They will stink this year. Schmidt is much better than Zito.
