I'm 33 weeks pregnant with my first baby and don't have any kind of experience on this matter. I've heard that Medela is the best brand to get. Does anyone know where to find them for a decent price?

Hand pumps are terrible. I wouldn't reccomend one to anybody. The one I had was rather expensive compared to other hand pumps and supposed to be one of the best (Avent) and yet it had no way of adjusting the suction... and the suction level it was designed with/pre-set for was so strong it felt like it was trying to suck my toes through my breasts or something. It was awful (and painful!). And for all that discomfort it didn't even pump much milk out!

I loved the Medela Pump In Style double electric pump. That device is wonderful! You can adjust the strength of the suction as well as the speed to suit yourself. That is especially wonderful if you are sore. You can start out gentle until you get accustomed to it and then increase the suction strength and speed to whatever level you like. This model usually costs somewhere between $250 and $300 (at least at the stores I've seen it at), but it is worth every last penny. It doesn't matter if you are planning on going back to work or not, I would reccomend this pump for ANY nursing mother.

I believe I've believe I've seen Medela sold at Target, at least around where I live. I've also heard (through my breastfeeding class) that Medela's a good brand, particularly for the electric pumps.

I personally used the Avent hand pump, and it served me well. For most people, though, it's probably a better to go with an electric double-pump if you're planning on pumping at work, since your milk will all let down at the same time and then you can get both sides taken care of at once. I just couldn't bring myself to use an electric pump, since I grew up on a dairy farm and those things just remind me WAY too much of the milkers used on our cows! LOL.

BTW - the Avent hand pump was also recommended in my nursing class.

Hope this helps! Congrats on your new baby!

I have the Medela Pump n Style. Excellent product!!! I love it.
It is pricey, but it's also a investment if you're planning on any more children or you want to have sucess. A lot of cheap pumps don't work that well. I would avoid hand pumps at all costs.
It's still still cheaper then a year of formula.

If you talk to WIC (women, infants children) often times they can tell you where to get one for a good price, also La Leche League will tell you all you need to know about breast feeding. The Hospitals often rent out pumps if you buy your own tubing (can be bought at BabiesRus). If you buy a used one somewhere make sure you can buy new tubing for it as that is a good way to pass infections. Medelas themselves can be bought at target, walmart and Babiesrus.

For a good manual alternative try the Avent Isis. The handle is ergonomically correct to make expressing easier.

Just a little note as i work at a pharmacy, if you have insurance your breast pump could be paid for in full or they will pay for you to rent it for as long as you want as long as you have a persciption, so i would pull out your insurance card call the number on the back and ask someone..no sense buying one if you can have it for free...also check ebay alot of women do this then sell the new or slightly used pumps and if you feel wierd about it you can always replace some parts...good luck

I'm pregnant with my first child and I was told to get a Medela, I got one because I put it on my registry..or you can rent one from the hospital and I hear they are really good, I've heard to NOT get a hand pump. Good luck

If you only need to pump an occasional bottle a hand pump is fine. If you need to make a lot of bottles, or are going back to work, make sure you get a double electric pump. If you are on WIC they will lend them to you for free. A lot of insurance companies and some employers will also cover some or all of the cost of the pump as well. Good luck!

Not sure about specific prices (check with the local la leche league), but buying a good heavy duty one is the way to go if you're definately serious about breast feeding. Also, since this child will be your first, you can think of this purchase as an investment for future children.

Why do you want a breast pump? My daughter had to pump her milk to send to NICU when the baby was still in the hospital, and they let her take the one home from the hospital. You shouldn't need a breast pump until or unless you will be going back to work soon and you want the baby to have your milk while you are gone. Otherwise, the baby should regulate the flow.

Yes, it is pretty painful for awhile it has been over a year since I last breastfeed but , the milk coming in is sore and your body doesn't know how much you need. Once you get use to the feeding it will calm down, it takes awhile not to leak and for the adjustment. The sorest part for me was my nipples , it just got so raw from the constant nursing, the lanolin ointment works well as a barrier and is safe to put on and for your baby. For the engorgement I would get a wash cloth and put warm/hot water on it and lay in across my chest. I really can't remember how long it took to settle into breastfeeding but once your body knows how much milk to produce for your baby and you nipples get use to it, it really is fine and a wonderful experience.
